Knollstraße
On the Gertrudenberg in Osnabrück, an impressive old building towers above everything surrounding it. At first glance it looks less like a 1970s reform university and more like a building with the charm of Oxford. While many buildings were reclassified for completely different uses during the transition to the university, this does not apply to the prestigious building on Knollstraße: In 1868, a "mental asylum" opened on the site, renamed "Provincial Institute for Healing and Care" in 1899.
In 1952, after overcoming a dark episode during the Third Reich, the clinic came under the auspices of the state and then belonged to the "Lower Saxony State Hospital". As early as the 1980s, the state hospital and the university’s Institute of Psychology were collaborating with one another. From 1995 onwards, the Institute of Psychology occupied the former administration building, which had been renovated and converted beforehand.
Since the end of 2022, the property has no longer been used by the university.
