Balu und Du - Mentoring for Primary School Pupils
Learning through civic engagement
- Credit points with heart -
The program:
In the mentoring program Balu und Du, students from all disciplines get involved for a year as a mentor(Balu) for a primary school child(Mogli) from our cooperating elementary school in Osnabrück. The teachers nominate the children for this prevention program.
What do you do as a mentor?
As a student, you will meet with the child once a week to play, explore and try things out together. In addition, you document each meeting in an online diary tool and take part in a weekly accompanying seminar during the semester. In exchange with other mentors and the coordinator, you will practice reflection and peer counseling and develop new ideas and approaches together.
What do you gain?
Depending on the degree program, you will receive 4 to 13 CP and a certificate of volunteering from the state of Lower Saxony, which is helpful when starting your career and applying for a scholarship. In some degree programmes, your commitment as a mentor is also recognized as an internship. Further information on recognition options (PDF, 32 kB).
You will gain valuable learning and practical experience by exploring other life concepts, positively shaping relationships or overcoming challenges. At the same time, you will refine your organizational, cooperation and communication skills.
In addition, you will experience that you are both setting the course in Mogli's life in a more favorable direction and contributing to a better society and Social Equity.
