Balu und Du - Mentoring for Primary School Pupils
In Germany, opportunities for education and participation still depend heavily on a child's social background. As a service learning program at Osnabrück University, Balu und Du is therefore committed to reducing inequalities, promoting the diverse potential of children and giving them more confidence in education and life.
In the Balu und Du mentoring program, students from all disciplines act as mentors(Balu) for a primary school child(Mogli) for one year. The teachers at our partner elementary school and specialists from independent youth welfare organizations nominate the children for this prevention program.
- As a student, you meet up with your child once a week to play, explore and try things out together. You decide together with your child exactly what the afternoons will look like - depending on their interests, needs and possibilities. Each tandem develops its own dynamic and a variety of learning opportunities open up along the way - often for both!
- In exchange with other mentors and the coordinator, you will practice reflection and peer counseling as part of a weekly support seminar and develop new ideas and approaches together. Professional input supplements the practical content.
- You will also document each meeting in an online diary tool.
Depending on the degree program, you will receive 4 to 13 CP and a certificate of volunteering from the state of Lower Saxony, which is helpful when starting your career and applying for a scholarship. In some degree programmes, your commitment as a mentor is also recognized as an internship.
You will gain valuable learning and practical experience by exploring other life concepts, positively shaping relationships or overcoming challenges. At the same time, you will hone your organizational, cooperation and communication skills.
In addition, you will experience that you are both setting the course of Mogli's life in a more favorable direction and contributing to a better society and Social Equity.
