Management Information System
What is the Management Information System?
The Management Information System (MIS) is the university's central platform for storing, processing, analyzing and presenting internal and external data. It supports central and decentralized organizational units in strategic decision-making by providing aggregated and anonymized key figures in the form of standard reports and interactive dashboards.
The MIS serves as a decision-support tool with which trends and developments in the university environment can be transparently tracked.
What data and topics are available in the MIS?
The range of topics covered by the MIS is diverse and is constantly being expanded. The range currently includes the following areas, among others:
- Students: Applicants, students, graduates
- Doctoral students and doctorates from the doctoral and examination statistics
- Capacity planning: results of the capacity calculation and study place allocation
- Research funding: third-party funding approvals
- Equality & diversity: gender distribution
- Internationalization: exchange students by nationality, incoming and outgoing students in the mobility index
This data can be evaluated according to various dimensions, e.g. by degree program, semester or faculty.
Daily updated and key date-related data
Some key figures are available on a daily basis, such as the current applicant situation. Other data can be accessed on a key date basis in order to analyze long-term developments, such as the results of capacity calculations or information from university statistics.
Technical implementation and data processing
The MIS database is continuously maintained and expanded. The raw data is extracted from the operational systems using Informatica data integration software, transformed and loaded into the central data warehouse. The data is presented in interactive reports and dashboards created with the business intelligence software IBM Cognos Analytics.
Cooperation & further development
The continuous maintenance and optimization of the MIS is carried out in close cooperation with the Centre for Digital Teaching, Campus Management and University Didactics (virtUOS).
