P6: Migration societies

Migration is a process based on spatial movement that affects and changes a wide variety of areas of society. Migration is an essential component and driver of social change. It is not only in research that migration is considered a phenomenon with far-reaching and increasing significance in a globalized world. Migration has long since become the subject of intense social debate and discussion. Migration-related knowledge is created and communicated in various areas of society, and migration-related changes are perceived, commented on, affirmed or rejected. The conditions, forms and consequences of migration are renegotiated on a daily basis with the participation of numerous actors with varying degrees of power. It is unclear why, in what constellations and with what interests, scope and consequences these complex processes take place. The profile line responds to this fundamental deficiency with an interdisciplinary basic research program.

The conditions for the planned program are very favorable. Interdisciplinary migration research has a long tradition at Osnabrück University. This applies in particular to the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS), which has been in existence for over 25 years, but also to the Institute of Islamic Theology (IIT) and the Center for Democracy and Peace Research (ZeDF).

More than 30 academics from five Schools (School of Cultural Studies and Social Sciences, School of Educational and Cultural Studies, School of Language and Literary Studies, School of Human Sciences, School of Law) are involved in the profile line.
