Get active and shape the future

Sustainable action is colorful and offers a wide range of opportunities

As an educational and research institution, Osnabrück University has a role model function and responsibility towards its members and society. In line with the principle of sustainability, it accepts this responsibility for current and future generations.

Numerous hands-on activities and projects in the areas of mobility, procurement, energy, construction, resource conservation and nature conservation characterize the work of university members at Osnabrück University under the title  Greening the University.

Whether you just want to check it out or change the world, everyone is welcome.

The Green Office Project started in the summer semester of 2025 and serves as a contact point for student engagement and participation in sustainable development at the University of Osnabrück. Here, networking on sustainability issues is promoted between students, teachers and staff, and external actors. We offer the opportunity to join forces in sustainability projects, to inform yourself, to exchange ideas, and to make a difference together. We are students at  Osnabrück University who look forward to getting to know you.

"Fridays4Future Osnabrück" and "Leben und Lernen e.V" : The WEEK - Filmprojekt 3-parts

The Week is fundamentally accessible online to everyone. However, its impact also stems from the shared experience of watching the films together, fostering connection and exchange among viewers and generating energy for action. The films are viewed, if possible, within a week. They provide a highly structured overview of the three ecological crises, their interplay, and their impacts. Furthermore, they allow viewers to participate in the process of the film's protagonists, who also realize, reflect on the situation in their own lives, and find encouragement and community in taking action. The films consider important aspects of climate psychology in their approach and take the viewer on an emotional journey.

Energy saving recommendations

Saving energy and protecting the climate can be so easy. Every kilowatt hour saved is great climate protection. So closing the window more often helps the university and the climate.

Used and good

Giving things a second life protects our resources and is also fun. We put old university items into circulation during our "Gebraucht und Gut" (used and good) campaigns or on the swap shelf.

Campus Greening

Edible campus to bird protection: information and participation are welcome. We want to promote biodiversity on our campus and we can only do this together.

University initiative for employees

All university employees have the opportunity to use 5% of their working time for work shadowing or participation in temporary, internal university initiatives. This regulation offers the opportunity to develop your own ideas and initiatives or to actively participate in existing initiatives that serve the further development of the university.

"Deposit belongs next to it" campaign

The university is gradually installing a deposit collector on many garbage cans. This means that deposit bottles can simply be placed next to the garbage can and nobody has to search for them in the garbage. There are already numerous options on the Westerberg campus.

NEO I Nachhaltiges Engagement Osnabrück

NEO is a student initiative of the university. However, UOS students are also very welcome. NEO offers students from all disciplines the opportunity to exchange ideas about sustainable development and to get involved in the university landscape and society.

Climate plate

In the award-winning canteen of the Studentenwerk, you will find climate-friendly dishes with products from the region every day. Vegetarian or vegan delicacies are also available every day.

Toilets are not waste garbage cans. Please do not dispose of waste in the waste water. Use the water-saving fittings. This will protect this valuable resource.

Sustainability in university sports

Promoting social sustainability has always been a central task of university sports. In addition to the social dimension, ecological aspects are increasingly coming into focus, and due to its wide reach and multiplier effect, raising awareness among university sports participants for resource-saving and sustainable behavior is gaining importance. Numerous measures have already been implemented.
