Islamic theology deals with the history and present of Islam, with Islamic education and upbringing in the context of a non-Muslim majority society. At its core are the theological disciplines of Koranic studies and prophetic tradition, the foundations of faith and Islamic jurisprudence. The language of Islam, Arabic, is the starting point that supports and initiates the original language approach to the two main Islamic sources (Quran and Sunnah) in religious education, which is important alongside the exegetical penetration of the Quranic text in German. The subject "Islamic Religion" is primarily concerned with the field of work of future Muslim religious education teachers. The ability to didactically prepare the core theological subjects for teaching and practical theological skills to be able to deal with interreligious issues are therefore important learning objectives. However, the examination of societal questions about religions in general and the resulting secular questions about the basic understanding of religion in times of a break with tradition, secularization and individualization are also reflected upon.
Osnabrück University is one of the first universities in Germany to offer the undergraduate subject "Islamic Religion" for the first time in the winter semester 2012/13, thus laying the foundations for the training of teachers for Islamic religious education in Germany. The cooperation with the two Institutes of Roman Catholic Theology and Protestant Theology in interreligious perspectives as well as the intensive examination of religious education and didactic perspectives on subject-specific content should be emphasized.
The Master of Education qualifies you to enter the period of school-based training called the Referendariat and subsequently for a career as a school teacher.
This course does not require any religious affiliation. However, in order to be allowed to teach Islamic religious education at public schools in Lower Saxony, you need a special authorization from the religious communities. This teaching license (Ijaza or Iǧāza in Arabic) is issued upon application by the Advisory Board for Islamic Religious Education in Lower Saxony and requires your commitment to Islam.
