Practical Work Experience

Information on practical work experience as a prerequisite for Vocational Teacher Education

General information

  • In Lower Saxony, all those aspiring towards Vocational Teacher Education must provide evidence of practical work experience. However, the requirements vary depending on the vocational subject.
  • Even though some vocational subjects at Osnabrück University only require practical work experience as part of the application for the Master's degree, it is generally advisable for students aiming towards Vocational Teacher Education to complete either relevant vocational training or to gain at least a few weeks of work experience in subject-related areas before starting their Bachelor's degree. In that case, the remaining internships are usually completed during the lecture-free periods.
  • It should be noted in particular that only internships that were completed full-time for at least 4 weeks in a row count as evidence; however, internships that were completed for 8 weeks in a row at 20 hours/week may be converted into 4 weeks of practical work experience.
  • The training occupations listed below are only examples. If you have successfully completed other trainings, it can therefore be worthwhile asking whether this training can also be classified as relevant or whether it can at least be credited to a certain extent. A Voluntary Social Gap Year (FSJ) and Federal Voluntary Service (BFD) can also be taken into account if they were completed in suitable areas. The same applies to internships completed as part of obtaining the entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences and other activities.
  • If you are planning internships in areas other than those mentioned, it is advisable to ensure that they can be used for the certificate before starting the internship.

  • For this vocational subject area, either a relevant apprenticeship or 52 weeks of practical work experience in subject-related areas must be demonstrated.
  • Since the vocational specialization Electrical Engineering is studied at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, it may require that at least 8 weeks of practical training be proven before starting the Bachelor of Vocational Education.
