The doctoral program is an alternative form of Doctorate. It does not affect the other doctoral options and is carried out within the framework of the doctoral regulations of Osnabrück University for the participating Schools of Biology/Chemistry in the currently valid version.

The "Nanosciences" doctoral program imparts in-depth specialist knowledge and methodological skills for independent scientific work. In addition to deepening knowledge in the respective individual field of specialization, there is the opportunity to deal with other current research areas. Discussion of open research problems and further interdisciplinary training.

During the doctoral studies program, students primarily write their dissertation, which proves that they are able to achieve results that contribute to the development of the scientific field, its theories and methods through in-depth, independent scientific work. Practical work on the dissertation begins at the start of the first semester, irrespective of the courses to be attended. Doctoral students are given the opportunity to present the problems and progress of their doctoral projects in a joint reporting seminar. It is important that the doctoral students develop the ability to place their doctoral project in the scientific and social environment and to make it understandable to a non-specialized audience.

In addition, doctoral students attend subject-specific lectures and lecture series as well as seminars in order to deepen their specialist and interdisciplinary knowledge and to become familiar with current research topics and problems in related subjects.

The doctoral program "Nanosciences" serves as a professional and research-qualifying study program for the training of young scientists. The course prepares doctoral students for a future career in scientific and application-related fields of work.

In terms of content, the doctoral program "Nanosciences" requires a free choice of 24 semester hours per week from the lectures and seminars offered by the Schools of Biology/Chemistry and Physics. This number is increased accordingly for doctoral students who were given conditions upon admission to the doctoral program. There are no examinations during the course of study.
