The focus of the subject of history is on the in-depth study of textual, visual, audio and material sources in the tradition of the epochs from antiquity to the present day. It also involves a critical examination of different research approaches and intensive reflection on basic categories of history such as time, space and gender in political, legal, social, economic and cultural contexts.

The research projects and courses on the specialist Master's degree course are oriented towards questions of space and the idea of "Europe" in its global interdependencies, centers and peripheries, borders and the blurring of boundaries. The aim of the course is to understand continuities and ruptures in the historical development of Europe as the basis of today's contexts and to raise awareness of the dependence of the present on the past in order to shape the future.
The Department of History at Osnabrück University, with one professorship each for the history of antiquity, provincial archaeology, the Middle Ages, the early modern period, modern history and historical migration research as well as the didactics of history, enables students to study a wide range of topics and methods. In addition, there are close links in research and teaching with the interdisciplinary Institutes of Early Modern Intercultural Studies (IKFN) and Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS).
The consecutive specialist Master's degree course is designed as a research-oriented full-time course with 120 credit points (CP), which is completed with a Master's thesis and the degree "Master of Arts".
The degree program qualifies students for an academic career with the possibility of a subsequent Doctorate as well as for work outside the university in the fields of science management, archives and libraries, museums and exhibitions, journalism and public relations, publishing, tourism and management consulting.
Degree in an undergraduate degree program in History (e.g. Bachelor's degree). Further information on the access requirements can be found in the admission regulations.
Applicants in possession of international certification must demonstrate sufficient levels of German Language Proficiency.

The examination regulations do not prescribe an obligatory period of study abroad. However, a number of Options for Studying Abroad are available to you within a range of exchange programs. The International Office will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
Studying at Osnabrück University means you will be subject to semester fees.
