Departments and institutes: Overview

The Department of Mathematics/Computer Science/Physics consists of three institutes

 Institute of Mathematics

 Institute of Computer Science

 Institute of Physics

with their various specialisms.

The Department of Mathematics/Computer Science/Physics is involved in the following institutions beyond the boundaries of its subject areas:

Joint Lab Artificial Intelligence and Data Science
Osnabrück University and the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) in Potsdam are now jointly training doctoral students at the interface of agricultural science and artificial intelligence. The cooperation is funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK) together with the Volkswagen Foundation as part of the "zukunft.niedersachsen" programme with around 6.7 million euros.

 Ecorisk
ECORISK is concerned with the causes and consequences of ecological regime changes in socio-ecological systems. Rapid socio-economic changes have closely linked ecosystems and human activities and led to systemic risks. These regime shifts, sudden transitions in ecosystems, can trigger cascading effects worldwide. ECORISK uses an interdisciplinary team and a holistic approach to analyse these shifts, their risks and how they are perceived by different actors. It focuses on the dynamics of ecosystems, human activities and governance, with intensive agriculture serving as a leading example.

 nanomaterials@biomembranes
The aim of "nanomaterials@biomembranes" is to offer interdisciplinary research training at the interface of biology, chemistry and physics. The research programme focuses on the development of novel biophysical techniques to elucidate dynamic processes at lipid membranes from the mesoscopic to the atomic level. To this end, we will utilise the unique electronic and optical properties of novel nanomaterials to interrogate and manipulate biological processes with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution.

  Data Science Research Centre
Association of scientists at Osnabrück University with the aim of anchoring data science as a key technology at the location. The research centre offers a platform for joint exchange on research and teaching.

Research centre CEDER (Center for Early Childhood Develop, ment and Education Research)
Interdisciplinary research on early childhood education and development in collaboration with the Lower Saxony Institute for Early Childhood Education and Development (nifbe).

CellNanOs research centre (Centre of Cellular Nanoanalytics Osnabrück)

The Centre of Cellular Nanoanalytics Osnabrück is a joint project of the Departments of Biology/Chemistry, Human Sciences and Mathematics/Computer Science/Physics to promote interdisciplinary research at the interface between nanosciences and cell biology. CellNanOs aims to promote the development and application of cutting-edge techniques to decipher the fundamental principles of cellular microcompartments in the context of a variety of physiological processes.

Research Centre Institute for Environmental Systems Research
At the Institute for Environmental Systems Research (IUSF ), scientists from the fields of mathematics/computer science, cultural and social sciences and economics work together on an integrated description and analysis of the state of the environment and its compartments.

  DFKI research areas
The German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence is represented in Osnabrück with the areas of plan-based robot control and smart enterprise engineering.

  KI-Campus
A merger of the research-intensive and application-oriented subjects of computer science, cognitive science, business informatics and mathematics in collaboration with AI laboratories and AI start-ups.

JointLab Artificial Intelligence and Data Science
The University of Osnabrück and the  Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) in Potsdam are working together at the interface of agricultural science and artificial intelligence.

Research Centre Institute for Environmental Systems Research
In collaboration with the  Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ , research is carried out in the field of "Ecological Modelling".
