History of the department

2024 The School of Physics is founded.

2023 The School of Mathematics/Computer Science/Physics and the School of Physics form the new School of Mathematics/Computer Science/Physics.

2020 Systems Science is integrated into the Institute of Mathematics as a new working group.
The former Institute of Environmental Systems Research is transferred to an interdisciplinary research centre at Osnabrück University.

2016 The Institute of Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing and the Institute of Computer Science merge to form the new Institute of Computer Science.

2015 The Institute of Cognitive Mathematics and the Institute of Mathematics merge to form the new Institute of Mathematics.

2004 The Institute of Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing is founded and geoinformatics degree programmes are opened.

2004 The Institute of Mathematics is founded.

2003 The Institute of Computer Science is founded.

1999 The Institute of Cognitive Mathematics is founded.

1994 The Institute of Environmental Systems Research is founded from the "Ecological and Socio-Economic Systems Research" working group.

1989 The Department of Applied Systems Science expands the range of subjects in the department.

1985 The department is renamed Mathematics/Computer Science.

1980 As part of the reorganisation of the departments at Osnabrück University, the Department of Mathematics begins its work with the subjects of Mathematics and Computer Science.

1977 The Department of Computer Science is established.

1974 Start of study programmes in various areas of mathematics and mathematics didactics.
