In this talk our Geography Master students (Geo GUZ) will present their study project results on understanding regime shifts in rural Indonesia. Aim was to examine the dual role that agricultural land use (change) plays in socio-ecological systems. We investigated whether changes in agricultural land use exacerbate or mitigate the risks of socio-ecological regime shifts that could lead to e.g., decreased biodiversity, altered ecosystem (services), socio-economic impacts and affected community livelihoods. The study project also explores the balance between agricultural productivity, environmental conservation, and socio-economic benefits, aiming to identify practices that promote resilience and sustainability in the face of ecological and societal challenges, thereby informing sustainable land management and policy decisions. For this the project centers around four key research topics: institutional governance, gender dynamics, soil, and water conditions, all crucial to understanding these shifts in West Java, Ciputri (Cianjur Regency), and Ciwidey (Bandung Regency). During the field work we collaborated successfully with students and staff from Universitas Indonesia.
