This course focuses on students' reading comprehension at an advanced and profound level. It is my contention that a focus on "literary" reading - by which I mean a focus on plot, character, content, metaphor and "story" - through most students' literary nascence means that many readers fail to truly grasp a text at a linguistic level - by which I mean at a grammatical, syntactic, lexical, stylistic and rhetorical level. It is this "linguistic" reading that is the focus of this course.
Students will be required to present a piece of literature - either a complete story or an extract from a prose work, fictional or non-fictional - for discussion in the class. The final grade will be awarded for the class you lead as well as a paper of 2500 words about a reading project of your own choice and design. |
