The School of Law is characterized by its focus on Business Law and European Law. The classic range of studies (German) offered at Osnabrück University, geared towards training students to become lawyers, reflects the focus on Business Law by enabling students to pursue additional studies in Business Law during their basic studies and by providing for specialization options in Business Law, European and International Law within the priority program.
In the Bachelor’s program in Business Law, students are trained for employment at the interface between Business and Law. In addition, foreign language training for lawyers is offered – the only School in northern Germany to do so. Participants in these courses gain specialized knowledge of a foreign language, as well as a basic knowledge of the legal system concerned; they are also prepared for periods abroad and for professional activities abroad or with an international outlook. In close collaboration with the Language Center, training is offered in British English, American English, French, Italian, Dutch, Polish and Spanish; all of the lecturers are qualified native speakers. The Writing Workshop offers students help and guidance in writing specialized texts.
The high-quality legal revision course offered at Osnabrück University, called OsnaRep, enables the knowledge gained in class to be revised, expanded and updated using cases studies in all compulsory subjects addressed in the First State Examination in Law. European Law and Business Law equally shape the research conducted in the three legal subdisciplines of Civil Law, Public Law and Criminal Law. Research into the further development and transposition of European Union law – for example, the creation of European Civil Law, harmonizing the taxation of cross-border matters, national and international anti-trust law and the international fight against organized crime – shape the work carried out at the six institutes.
