Individual Stays Abroad
You are of course also at liberty to apply for a place at a university abroad directly and on your own initiative. This does mean however that you will have to pay any tuition fees yourself. An individual stay abroad makes sense if your own particular needs and wishes are not covered by existing programs, if you were not granted a place on a specific program, or if you have secured financing without participating in an existing program. To finance your stay abroad, you could however apply for a scholarship or for overseas BAföG.
Applying
If you would like to apply to study at a university abroad without participating in an existing program, you should apply directly to the university abroad for any information you might need and any application forms. If you do not intend to complete a degree abroad and just want to spend some time studying there as part of your domestic degree, you should apply as a “non degree student”. You will then pay lower fees in many cases and be processed through a simplified application procedure.
