Foreign Language Assistantships
Prospective teachers - and also students of other courses of study depending on the host country – have access to positions as foreign language assistants offered by education authorities abroad. This involves a six- to eleven-month-long foreign language assistantship (depending on the country) teaching German in schools, for which you will receive appropriate remuneration. Applicants must have completed (Europe) four semesters of study (except France: 2 semesters) by the time you start the job. Applicants applying to Norway must have studied German (education degree or German as a foreign/second language).
Australia and New Zealand require applicants to possess a Master of Education (proof of degree is required when starting the job) and English as an examination subject. The USA and Canada require applicants to have studied for a minimum of six semesters.
You can apply if you are:
- a student of Education (Bachelor students intending to take a Master of Education degree are given equal status to students of Education) or a graduate with your 1st or 2nd State Examinations in Education whose major or specialism is in the language of the target country.
- a student or graduate of a different course program whose major or specialism is in the target country’s official language, or a student of Education or graduate with your 1st or 2nd language examinations for Education degrees in a different subject who can demonstrate proficiency (B1) in the language of the target country.
Priority will be given to applicants whose major subject is the language of the target country.
